10 brilliant books to teach about the environment

Following on from last week’s post on activities to do with children to help teach them about sustainability, today I am listing some books I love that you can read with the children. I’d love to hear about any I have missed. Please leave a comment below. I’ve added links to where you can but these books new, but you’ll also find them secondhand on the likes of eBay or, better still,  borrow them from your library.

Albert Ross The Albatross: Blue Spaghetti (Nicola Leigh)
Albert finds a new type of food is replacing all of his fish: a mystery called “blue spaghetti.” He sees animals become sick and tangled up from this new food so tries to clean up the ocean. Great introduction to saving our oceans. (FIND OUT MORE)

This book shows the importance of the air purity; the different forms of its presence in nature and how it is important along with reasons to respect and take care of the air. Witty illustrations. (FIND OUT MORE)

Learn How to Protect Our Oceans with Finn (Georgina Stevens)
The story has a strong but upbeat message for children about the impact of ocean plastic on our marine life and includes an A-Z with lots of ideas for children to try to reduce their use of plastic. We love that (FIND OUT MORE)

A beautifully simple book for small children where transforming pages reveal ten things that everyone can do to help conserve their world. I also found this brilliant activity sheet to support the book. (FIND OUT MORE)

How to give up plastic will mccallum

How to Give Up Plastic: A Guide to Changing the World, One Plastic Bottle at a Time (Will McCallum)
Easy to digest (although shocking) facts about how bad the plastic problem is. For older children, this guide informs and then gives practical advice. Its authored by the ‘head of oceans’ at Greenpeace! (FIND OUT MORE)
